How is the result calculated?

Laminate for a living room: 12 ft × 10 ft, 10% waste

A rectangular living room measures 12 by 10 feet, so the area is 120 sq ft. With a 10% waste allowance the area to cover is 132 sq ft. Boxes of laminate typically cover about 20 sq ft, so 132 ÷ 20 = 6.6 — you need 7 boxes. At $45 per box that is $315 of material, before underlayment, trim, and tools.

What are the most common mistakes?

  • Allowing no waste and running short mid-install — a discontinued flooring line cannot be matched later.
  • Rounding boxes down when the calculator says 6.6, then running out with one plank to go.
  • Estimating by room count instead of by actual length and width measurements.

What are the assumptions and limitations?

  • Assumes a rectangular room; irregular layouts must be split into rectangles.
  • Box coverage varies by product — check the label; coverage can differ from the nominal square footage.
  • Cost excludes underlayment, trim, adhesive, and installation labor.

Frequently asked questions

How much waste should I allow?

Straight layouts with a good installer run 5–10%; diagonal, herringbone, or patterned layouts need 10–15%. Buy at least the calculator’s recommendation — manufacturers discontinue lines, and matching a later batch is often impossible.

What about underlayment and trim?

This calculator covers the flooring itself. Underlayment is sold by roll and covers roughly the same area; baseboards and transitions are measured in linear feet and bought separately.

Can I estimate an L-shaped room?

Split it into two rectangles, run the calculator for each, and add the boxes. The waste allowance then covers the cuts at the junction.
